Jimmy Eat World is a band I have loved for a long time. I saw them play just once- probably 7 years ago. They played the Studio at Madison Square Garden. That has stayed with me all these years as an absolutely incredible show. When I found out that they would be playing the Summer Stage in NYC on August 7- I jumped at the chance to cover the event.
Royal Bangs opened up the show. This 4 piece indie rock band from Tennessee did a really great job of getting the crowd ready.
Jimmy Eat World took the stage flanked by a simple banner with their name across it. When I saw them play years before, I remember that they had all these old TV sets that would show static and other images. But for this show in NYC, props were not needed. Central Park's Summerstage was sold out for this show, and a light breeze drifted across while they launched into their first song, I Will Steal You Back.
Later on in the set singer Jim Adkins mentioned that they have been a band for almost 20 years, but those years sound great on them. It was clear that this set was going to be for the fans- they played every song anyone could possible want them to play. Spanning all 7 albums songs like Lucky Denver Mint, Kill, Work, Futures, Hear You Me, Pain, A Praise Chorus, Futures, Sweetness and Bleed American . They even played a cover of We Are Never Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift.
Adkins didn't really talk much during their set, but he did at one point talk about how honored he was to be playing in NYC. Then during their encore he said, "This next song...I think, I think it was requested." Then they played 23 which was indeed requested many times on twitter. Everyone sang together about heartbreak and getting older while the breeze stirred the trees, it was absolutely gorgeous. They ended their set with The Middle and promised to come back soon. I, for one, cannot wait for that.
