On Saturday night Miley Cyrus brought her tour to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. No pop singer has been in the news more than Miley lately, so I knew her show would be nuts. I was not prepared for how nuts it was.
She brought along Icona Pop and Sky Ferreira to open the show. I knew Icona Pop from that song they had about driving their car into a bridge and throwing their ex-bf's clothes away or something. I dunno. This whole show, none of it was really my style. I will say IP brought a high energy to their set and was a great way to start a concert like this one.
The model-turned-singer Ferreira was up next, and she was definitely more subdued than the group she followed. Unfortunately for me, who was there to photograph the event, shooting her set was beyond rough. Dark, and she hid in the back the whole time. I literally only got two shots that were usable from where I was shooting.
When it was time for Miley to come out, the place pretty much exploded. Her huge face showed up on the screen while her dancers and assorted other people dressed in costumes took the stage. Eventually the mouth on that huge face opened, a huge tongue came out, and eventually Miley herself slid down that tongue. That was coming out of her huge face.
It was clear this wasn't going to be any ordinary show. In the 3 songs that I was allowed to photograph she had a midget dressed like Brittany Spears, furries dancing, transvestites, confetti, smoke, a gold car, fake money, and a huge bobble head rapper. It was unbelievable.
The whole spectacle left me feeling a little strange and confused. But this isn't a show for me, I am definitely not her demographic. The place was packed with people who this show was aimed towards, and it was clear they were loving all of it. Screaming, singing, cheering and even some tears. It was clear that Cyrus brought Mileywood to Brooklyn, and they couldn't get enough of it.
