Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, is currently on tour behind his excellent new album, Because The Internet. Last week Gambino brought The Deep Web Tour to Hammerstein Ballroom and I was there to cover the show.
This was my second time seeing, and photographing Gambino. The lights were a bit tricky at times, but there is no denying the energy and talent that he brings to the stage. Before he even came out those logged onto the app drew dirty pictures and shouted out their friends on the huge screen that was above the stage. He started out on piano, alone, but soon it exploded, full band into the opening tracks from the new album.
Gambino live is what you hoped he would be; energetic, happy, talented. Dancing across the stage, never staying in one place for more than 3 seconds. The screen behind him constantly changed as well, like it was trying to keep up with the energy on stage.
He spent a good part of the show focused on the new album, but later on when he said: "Let's get into some old shit, New York" it was clear that Camp and Royalty were loved as well. The place was sold out, and no one stopped moving. Not on the stage, or in front of it.
