On Thursday night, June 6, Dave Matthews Band brought their summer tour to PNC Bank Arts Center. It has been several years since they have played PNC, so everyone in the sold out crowd was super excited for the show.
It had been raining all day, but the rain didn't stop anyone from taking their seats or spreading their blankets on the lawn. Dave himself came out to introduce the openers, The Head and The Heart, before they took the stage. He thanked us all for coming and said he was a huge fan of the band he brought along.
They certainly didn't disappoint. With strong lead and overlapping vocals, multi instruments including violin and keys, they were really fantastic.
After they left the stage everyone scrambled to get everything ready for DMB to kick off their summer tour NJ style. I could tell from the initial set up that the lights were going to be beautiful- my expectations were exceeded once they started. The band sounded tight like they had played 100000 shows together, which isn't too far off. Of course Dave Matthews held it down, front and center, but the thing that everyone loves about DMB is how they all play together.
Tim Reynolds hung in the back playing amazing electric guitar. Boyd Tinsley on violin, Carter Beauford on drums, Stefan Lessard on Bass, and Jeff Coffin and Reshawn Ross on horns. They played together beautifully, weaving instruments together as only Dave Matthews Band can do.
For years DMB has been playing their summer tour. At this point, it doesn't really feel like summer until they are in town. Despite the rain, Thursday felt like the official kick off of summer. And for a few hours, no one was thinking of anything except the music. Which is more than anyone can ever ask for.
