Mayhem Festival is currently heading around the country bringing the best metal to your front door. For the second year, I was able to cover the event at PNC Bank Arts Center on Tuesday July 23. Also for the second time, I was able to shoot Rob Zombie as he was headlining the event. I have shot Zombie once before and his lighting was notoriously tough for photos. But I was one of the few approved to shoot him and I was looking forward to it.
I wasn't disappointed in the least. He brings robots, pyro, monster and old school monster movies to his show.
In my last review of Zombie I stated how impressed I was with his stage show and energy. For someone as busy as he is, and for someone who has spent over 20 years rocking out, he brings everything to the stage, every night.
And this year I had great lighting to shoot from, and I felt so fortunate to be able to cover this.
After my allotted 3 songs for shooting, I stuck around for a while to enjoy the show. About 6 songs in Zombie entered the crowd and eventually made his way to my seat, rocking out and making thousands of people lose their minds at the same time. It was impressive. Most guys of his caliber do not climb over the barricade and enter the crowd without security to get up close and personal.
Well done, sir. Well done.
